Geelong is a Good Base for Travel in the Melbourne Region
The city of Geelong, 73 km (44 miles) west of Melbourne is a perfect place to stay while exploring both the coastal and inland features of southwest Australia.
Geelong itself has a vibrant waterfront, a number of intact art deco buildings, and some unusual industry, the saltworks. Day trips by car from here include:
- Ballarat - early gold mining town with historic park
- Grampians National Park - mountains, forests, native wildlife, beautiful scenery.
- Bellarine Peninsula - wineries, historic seaside towns
- Torquay and coast - swimming and surf beaches
- Great Ocean Road - famous scenic drive along the coast, includes the famous rocks known as the Twelve Apostles
- Melbourne - major city, accessible by train and by road.
Visiting the Grampians or the Great Ocean Road can also be done as a multi-day trip, depending on how much time the travellers want to spend in the car on any given day.
When planning a drive on the Great Ocean Road, estimate a very slow average speed, not highway speeds. Allow at least one-third longer time than usual to cover a given distance.
Rose Garden Motel is Good Value and Comfortable

While the motel's setting is fairly non-descript, the grounds themselves and the motel units are well above average for this price range.
The rose garden of the name is a collection of roses, well-established and planted near the entrance and by the swimming pool. Some of the units back on to the garden around the swimming pool. There is a barbeque available for guests who want to cook.
The motel offers units with kitchenettes, and breakfast may be ordered by day for delivery to the room in the morning. There are no restaurants extremely close by, although it is only a short drive to find them, or to buy groceries. The RSL (Returned Servicemen's League) is 400 metres away (about 400 yards) and serves meals. It is open to non-members.
The Rose Garden's owners take great pride in making their guests welcome and comfortable. The rooms are very clean and outfitted with everything travellers typically want.
Wheelchair Accessible - No Stairs
Most of the units have parking right at the door to the room, and everything is at ground level. The garden rooms have sliding glass doors opening on to the pool and barbeque area.
It would be best to email or telephone the owners directly for the details of units with accessible bathrooms, as there are several choices in the size and style of the rooms and the bathrooms.
Overall, the Rose Garden delivers excellent value and a high level of visitor comfort.
